Can a tablet replace your smartphone?

Here's a thought-provoking post by Kevin Tofel at GigaOm who takes the stance that tablets will eventually replace smartphones. We know that the Galaxy Note has been a happy success story at least in Asian markets. So it's perhaps not surprising to speculate that tablets can replace smartphones, especially as they assume more compact form factors ranging from The 'phablets' - the Note's 5.5 inch screen and LG Optimus Vu upto the 7 inch Nexus 7 and rumored iPad Mini.

Dual usage devices are always loved by consumers as they make fantastic value for money. The Galaxy Note met such a need, providing a top end smartphone and well speced tablet for less than half the price you would have paid for each separately. Small wonder that in a value conscious market like India, it was a great hit. However, functional design is also critical to success. A tablet that is too large to make calls is unlikely to be used as a phone.

It will be interesting to see if Kevin's prediction comes true. Today, we spend the premium on smartphones for functions that are better suited for tablets!
