Gartner's Hype Cycle of Emerging Technology

Technology intelligence firm Gartner has constructed a 'hype cycle' which maps current and emerging technologies tracing their evolution over time, and the time they will take to reach maturity.

It is interesting to note that some of the biggest buzzwords of 2012 like crowdsourcing, 3D printing and HTML 5 still have 5-10 year cycles to reach their peak. Whereas 'big data', wireless power and cloud computing should reach a plateau in 2-5 years. In fact, Gartner's analysis shows that cloud computing has already reached the 'trough of disillusionment' which implies that it is moving out of the buzz and into a space of implementation.
