The future of social media is on mobiles

Dion Hinchcliffe has written an insightful piece on ZDNet about the convergence of the social web and mobile devices. With a projected 1 billion smartphones by end 2012 and 1.4 billion social media users, it is obvious that mobile is the future playground for social media. As with all new developments there are opportunities and challenges in adopting to this new era. Hinchcliffe lists down some of them, notably the integration of apparently 'non-social' mobile apps with social networks and the evolution of digital business models centered around mobile platform providers (Google, Apple etc.). It's also interesting to note that the rich sensor data available on mobile devices (GPS, compass, barometer etc.) can enrich the social media experience considerably.

At the confluence of two huge global trends, the social web on the mobile is going to be a force to reckon with.
